Figures
First we observe ourselves.
We make connections betweens parts of our bodies and sizes.
We learn about Proportion
(we know there is room for some ... ish, in our calculations)
|
Second we learn about line gestures.
And realize, it was okay all along to start with a "stick figure".
12/20
Landscapes
Our goal was to create the feeling of space and depth on a 2-dimensional surface.
We modify the size, placement, value and detail of objects to make them appear closer or farther away.

Artist Signatures
Every artist has a signature. We spend time working on ours.
Some day I will see these signatures on works in museums around the world!

We look at several works of art by various artists. We search for the signature and discuss the different versions that we see.

Pre - Landscape
Before doing our large landscape project we did some quick sketches to check our initial understanding of how to create the feeling of space in a drawing.
9/20
Pencils & Value
Value - How light or dark a color is.We are getting ready to work on multi week project using the medium of graphite pencils. The upcoming project requires a good understanding of value and also ways of using graphite pencils, erasers and blending tools to manipulate the graphite to change the value produced.

Wire Figure Sculptures
|
Our first attempt at creating a '3-D' figure. We are translating what we learned/used when drawing a 2-D figure. We are always focused on keeping our figure symmetrical and in proportion.

5/18
Figure Drawing
Through observation we learned these facts about the figure.
- We are 6 heads(neck included) tall
- Just below the hips is the half way point
- Our arms stretched out is "about" the same length as how tall we are
We followed some basic drawing steps to sketch out our figures. And we took notes while sketching.
Then we used our sketches and notes to work on more finalized drawings

Clay Relief
Abstract
We spent a lot of time this year discussing and creating landscapes.
Our final stop is our abstract landscape relief plaques. We used the medium of clay and limited ourselves to a neutral color palette. |
Painting was a 2 step process.
First we brushed on a black layer of paint to fill in the crevices and enhance our texture.
We wiped off any surface black paint. Then we applied a translucent layer of our neutrals over top. |

Impressionism
Finally we get to be creative!
Our first landscape was a 'learning' landscape. So we all had to create the same houses and the same trees in the same foreground, middle ground and background locations.
This time the requirements are almost the same...
But this time the students trees, houses and location of each are not allowed to be the same as mine or any of their classmates!

Two 3rd graders were too excited to wait to see their images in color
,These two girls went home, drew out their final landscape ideas and brought in beautiful finished artworks.

Water Color Landscapes
Adding in the detail
After getting our initial wash of various values of our main colors onto our lanscapes its time to put on the finishing details. Using colored pencils we have added in detail to the foreground trees, houses and paths. We also used our colored pencils to adjust some areas in our paintings that need the values lighted or darkened to help to pull off the illusion of space.

Our Mural Work Has Begin
The Kelley school panel design is finished. Kelley school's panel was created using the Pop Art style of Roy Lichtenstein. We will use primary colors red, blue and yellow along with black and white to create our graphic cartoon fashioned image. We will also be using the benday dot technique to create the visual blending effect of different values and colors.

The students were amazed by the overhead projector "technology".

Learning how to use One Point Perspective in our drawings
We have just begun to experiment with one point perspective. We will use this drawing technique to help us to draw houses in our our landscape paintings. Drawing using one point perspective will add to the feeling of space (depth) in our images.
To review what we did in class and practice at home click the '1 point perspective page 'button below the cube. |

Photo Experiment
We looked at several works of art to see what an artist modifies in an image to create a feeling of depth (space). After looking at artworks we determined that size, placement and detail are big factors in making a two dimensional image look like it has three dimensional quality.
But we were not quite convinced so we did our own experiment. We had seven students who were all about the same height pose for the camera at varying distances between them and the photographer (another student.
The students do appear to be getting smaller!
Their feet are located at different levels of the image!
And the farther the students are away the less clear they become!

3rd Grade Art Grant
The Southington Public Schools received an art grant again this year. This grant gives the 3rd grade students an opportunity to participate in a large scale art project. Last year the 3rd grade students created a large photo montage of the Southington landscape. This original artwork can be viewed at Kelley school, it is located next to the cafeteria entrance. For this year's artwork Kelley school's 3rd grade student work will be one section of the district wide 8 sectioned mural. This large scale painting will ultimately be located on the rails to trails for viewing by all of Southington's walkers! |

We're getting ready for our visit with Rashmi Talpade
Rashmi Talpade is coming to our classroom in January to guide us in the creation of a multi media collage on the landscape of Southington. To get ready for Rashmi's visit we are starting our discussions on landscape and how to show depth in an image. To begin we are learning about how to draw an image that looks like it takes up space, having items close up in the foreground and far away in the background. We are using the technique of one point perspective to help get this idea across.

Leaf Animals
Using a variety of actual leaves and leaf images (drawings and photographs) as references we have started to experiment with creating drawings of 'leaf' animals .
We are looking at the different shapes that leaves come in and see if we can find those similar shapes in the animals we want to create.
