Water Color Pencil - Cards
We are going to be using the medium of water color pencils for our surreal landscape. To give ourselves some practice and experience with this medium, we created cards. Some of us made cards with winter themes and some of us cards with valentines themes. But all of us enjoyed the "magic" of color pencils turning to paint.

Learning about Surrealism, Salvador Dali and Juxtaposition.
Salvador Dali
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality". Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

Continuous Line Portraits
We spent a lot of time focused on portraiture this year.
We are ending the year with a quick, light hearted portrait activity.
The students are to create a portrait of themselves using one continuous line (no picking up their paint brush!)

It's time to paint and dress our puppets
We're beginning to costume our puppets by painting our the face, neck and hair with acrylic paints. However, it's not as easy as it seems. We need to paint our puppets with a realistic skin tone but have only been given the three primary colors red, yellow and blue along with our two value changers white and black. There is a lot of experimenting and color analyzing going on!

Learning about puppets from Jim Henson
We watched a fifteen minute YouTube clip
Jim Henson on Making Muppets 1969
Then began our puppet project by sculpting puppet heads out of clay. This was 99% of the classes first time at trying to create 3-dimentional portrait. We used many of the same concepts about proportion in our 3-d sculpture that we do for our 2-d portrait drawings.
Next we'll use some of the simple puppet body techniques we saw in the Jim Henson video to create the rest of our puppets. |

Sketching and Medium experimentation
Our Friendensreich Hundertwasser piece begins with sketching and experimentation.
The students have been given a chance to do a very open assignment.
The assignment: Create an artwork that emphasizes "line, shape, color, pattern and rhythm". In the style of Friendensreich Hundertwasser. The topic … anything they choose! The medium their choice of 2 or more combinations out of seven varieties available.
We walked through the process of how to work down from such an open platform.
