SPACE
Creating the sense of depth in Artwork
We are learning about what an artist can do to help to create a feeling of space in an Artwork.
To add a little whimsy to our winter scene we chose lollipops as our subject matter.
So we did a quick experiment with real delicious looking lollipops to see what it "REALLY" looks like when you have one lollipop closer to you, one a little farther away... and one really far away!

The Landscape Process
We start by creating our snowy landscape. Lighter in the foreground and it gets darker the farther off in the distance the snow is. Then we added our sky... not all skies are blue but since our lollipops are going to be very colorful, we went traditional. We were able to quickly add in background lollipops which are tiny, have very little detail and aren't very chromatic |

Texture
Kelley students are beginning a flower landscape that will review the concept of creating space (depth) in an image. This multi media artwork also focuses on the use of visual and actual texture.
|
Plantsville students are working on a collaborative pot to learn the coil technique and also experiment with actual and visual texture.

Our coil mugs after their first firing. Next we need to glaze them.
This year our second grade students will be making another mug. Last year they used the pinch technique to make the mug and coil for the handle. This year the second graders will learn about slab building and use a slab for the foot and build the mug up by using multiple coils. The process of scoring and slipping for the coil attachment is going to be crucial in creating leakproof mugs!

Collaborative Art
Second grade is intrigued by the progress of our 3rd grade artist's collaborative photo collage.
We have decided to begin our own collaborative artwork.
We started by looking at and discussing paintings created during the impressionist, post-impressionist and neo-impressionist movements. We discussed Monet's Haystacks, Van Gogh's Starry night and Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte.
We worked together using the technique of pointillism to created individual paintings of sky, grass and flowers. We then combined our individual paintings together to create one beautiful Second Grade Field of Flowers. |

Glazing our mugs
and
discussing the science behind it!
Glazes start as a liquid. Once they are brushed onto the mug they quickly dry and become a solid. While in the kiln the glazes are heated and become a liquid again. As the kiln cools the glaze becomes a solid once more. When we look at our fired mugs the look of the glazes and are completely different than they were in their initial solid state.

Weaving
We read the book, The Goat In The Rug, by Geraldine. Throughout our reading we discussed the difference in the way Glenmae got all her materials to make her rug and how we typically get our rugs. We talked about the sharpening of her scissors, cutting, washing, drying then brushing the mohair. Then Glenmae had to spin and pull the mohair to create the yarn. After that the yarn had to be dyed and finally woven. Wow! So much work... but what a beautiful one of a kind rug!.
We did a quick end of class weaving review using paper. Next we move onto weaving with yarn! |

The Seven Elements of Art
We have started to discuss the seven Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Form, Value, Space, Color and Texture.
The Elements of Art are the components that exist in a work of art. There are always at least two elements in a work of Art. Often times you can find all SEVEN. We are starting a project where you can find all seven elements. Illustrating a flower by drawing with glue and yarn. |
