Intermediate colors
We reviewed intermediate colors.
We can create an intermediate by mixing 2 primary colors together. BUT instead of using equal quantities of each of the primaries to make a secondary, we mix in more of one of the primary colors. The results are: Yellow-orange Red-orange Red-violet Blue-Violet Yellow-Green Blue-Green

Pattern
Regular vs Irregular pattern
We are going to include a mask on this year's portraits.
Masks are a big part of our lives this year. Masks have many meanings.
In art class we get to view them as another way to inspire art.
We are designing several patterns and then choose our the most successful design to enhance our image.

Sketching Emotions
The Process
- We brainstormed emotion words.
- We discussed the mood meter
- Chose 2 words (emotions) from each quadrant of the meter.
- Sketched a minimum of 2 sketches of facial features to portray each emotion.
- Had our classmates review our sketches and write down the emotion they saw in our sketches.
- Based on our peer feedback we made modifications to our sketches.
- We chose the most successful emotion sketches and turned them into emotional snowmen heads.

Self Portrait - Self Evaluation
In every grade we take some time at the completion of each project to reflect and celebrate our art accomplishments.
But in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade we take a few extra minutes after our self portraits to compare the portrait we have just completed to the previous year's portrait. We look at all the main features and attributes of our portraits and think about whether we believe we did "Better", the "Same" or "Worse" than the previous year. We also write about what area of our portrait that we feel was the most successful and what area we would like to improve on next year. |

Kelley Rocks
Our outdoor painted rocks have lost their color. The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are taking part in repainting them.
The color scheme for our rocks is complimentary color pairs. We are mixing tints and shades to be used for exciting designs. The fifth graders will be adding a kind or inspiring word to our rocks once the design is done. |

Texture Pendants
Students learn a glazing technique with this project that gives their pendants an antiqued look.
- When creating the pendants students must include texture
- When glazing the pendants the students apply black glaze first specifically making sure to get the glaze into the crevices.
- Then the students sponge the black glaze off. The black in the crevice area (texture area) remains.
- Finally the students apply one coat of a color glaze on top.

Fire Prevention Month
Students work on poster ideas outside of the classroom
Inside the classroom, students share ideas and give critiques
Students work on their Fire Prevention posters over a four week span.
Week one homework- Students create 4 pencil sketches of poster ideas. Week one in class work- The students share their ideas with fellow classmates and receive peer critiques. With the help of their peers they pick their most successful concept and take notes on ways it can be improved. Never forgetting that they are trying to get a message across and create an interesting image at the same time! Week two homework- Students create a 8x10 detailed sketch of their poster. Week two in class work- The students share their final poster sketch idea. This time the poster creator is not permitted to give any extra verbal eplanation of his/her poster. Instead the viewer must explain what message they are taking away from viewing the poster. Then the students discuss ways that the image could be made even more successful at conveying the fire prevention message. |
Week three and four homework-
Students perfect and complete a detailed colored version of final poster... reproduction quality.

After having spent much time getting to know their animal through drawing, the fourth graders turned to sculpture. The fourth graders created mugs using the pinch pot technique. In addition to spending time creating well crafted cups the the fourth graders had to add a handle that helped to represent their animal... perhaps a body part or a part of their animal's living environment. In addition the fourth graders researched their animals paw print and carved an impression of one or more prints into their mug.

Eric Carle… Animal… Collage
We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then we watched how Eric Carle creates his illustrations by watching a short video.
We are now working on our sketching skills by using line and shape to create gestural drawings of animals.
Each student gets to pick the animal that they enjoy sketching the most and use Eric Carle's painted tissue paper collage technique to complete their illustration.
