Henri Matisse and Cutting Paper
Henri Matisse created several large paper cutout masterpieces.
We looked at and discussed many of his works in a virtual museum tour.
Then we were inspired to create some organic paper artworks.

Organic shapes
We have been talking about shapes, symmetry and also organic shapes. We noticed when we cut out symmetrical organic shapes that we actually have 2 shapes. We have a positive shape that we cut out and in the "scrap" paper we have the negative shape. Maybe the scraps aren't really scraps? |

Impressionism vs Realism
We looked at and discussed several images of Monet's Water Lillies and Haystack. We compared the impressionistic style of Monet's paintings to the realism of photographs of actual water lilies. Our discussions include how much lighting can affect the color and way we feel when looking at an object.
We then got to experiment with oil and chalk pastels to create our own water lilies. |

Mug time
Last year in kindergarten the children were introduced to the pinch technique and created a very small cup.
This year the students will use the pinch technique to create a cup again except this time we will add a coil handle and get to use a little bit more clay to make a little bigger cup since our hands are a little bit bigger!

Color, Value, Shape, Line and Pattern
To get to know Matisse we read the intro of the book,
Cut-Out Fun with Matisse. Then we had discussions about Matisse as an artist and the artwork of his later years. When Matisse lived in Nice, France he worked by cutting and arranging paper. The focus of his work was on color, shapes, pattern and movement. We got to see images of what the walls in his Hotel Regina room looked like from images in the book. |

Pattern
The first grade students have been looking at bird images and discussing all the parts that make up a bird… head, beak, wing, feathers etc. We also noticed that if we look carefully we can see patterns in the birds feathers.
After sketching a few birds the first graders drew a final image which included patterns throughout that incorporated the use of line, shape and color.

COLOR
We read the book mouse paint.
We enjoyed visualizing the mice jumping into puddles of paint but wanted proof that what we read would really happen. So we got got a cup of the three primary colors and performed a science experiment!

Portraits
We started the year drawing portraits of ourselves.
After drawing the portraits we analyzed them to see if we left anything out.
